My July 10K RUN

Current mood: bouncy

So, I ran my first 10K in 4 years, at the Scripps Ranch 10K Running Event, here in San Diego. Why did I go on a hiatus? Well, after having my second child, going back to work, dealing with post partum depression, competitive running was not on the top of my list of priorities! Don't get me wrong, I missed it and wanted to get back into it but I let the reality of life take over in a bad way!

Now, having said that, I haven't "seriously" ran competitively since college. These 5K/10K and half marathon events are only competitive for me in my head, not as serious as college!

But I have to say that now I am older and a bit wiser, I would love to get my body in tip top shape to seriously compete again and this last 10k helped fuel the fire!

How did I know?

Well, for the first time in years, I started to spot my victims! Now these victims are good victims and probably good people but I need something to do to mentally get through the race. These victims could be directly in front of me or 10 yards away. Yet, I spot them and work on either catching up to them or simply passing them and then I look for the next one!

Did it work? Well, a couple of days later, I was told by a friend that I came in 6th place! That was probably in my age division and I have to tell you, the run felt great! I took my mind off the physically and pushed through mentally!

I know that you hear a lot of people say "if I can do it, you can do it too!". You realize that there is some truth to that silly little saying! But, what you need to realize, everyone begins at different levels. Some of us have just started putting one foot in front of the other while others have completed their first tri-athlon. Either way, you have started something!

I can't believe that I am racing again and what made the event sweeter, I raced to the finish line with some young guy who tried to take me on! He could not have been any older than 22 years old. If he only knew how old I was and that I had kids, a husband, great friends and a business to run! HA. . . I love it!

AND, when my group decided to go and pick up our free t-shirts, one of the volunteers looked at me up and down saying, "there is NO WAY you just completed this race! You look great!"

Guess what I had on . . . a DiRTY ReD running skort and DiRTY ReD VAPOR t-shirt along with my favorite DiRTY ReD hat! I felt comfortable and confident! I also ran a 48.5 minute 10K that day as well! No, not the fastest time but a time that I could be proud of! So, grab your favorite DiRTY ReD gear and get out there!

Just wanted to share!
